EP Trials Review
SWISS-AF
Swiss Atrial Fibrillation Cohort
Ref: SWISS-AF. JACC 2019. and SWISS-AF. Heart Rhythm LBCT 2020.
Swiss-AF is a multi-center prospective cohort study that is designed to assess relationships between cognitive function and vascular brain lesions in patients with AF. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cognitive testing using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) were performed in all participants.
Mean age was 73 ± 8 years, 28% of participants were women, 90% were anticoagulated at the time of study enrollment. Among 1,737 patients enrolled, 1,390 had no history of stroke. On MRI, large noncortical or cortical infarcts (LNCCIs) were found in 387 patients (22%); 201 clinically silent. LNCCIs were associated with worse cognitive function.
At 2 years of follow-up, 5.5% of patients developed new brain lesions. Among those, 85% were clinically silent, and 75% occurred while taking OACs.
